Connie Buchanan Durham is also a Messick alumna - class of 1929. When her older sister moved to Memphis she wanted to go to school in the city. Her father told her that he would give her a calf each year if she "tended to it " when she was home, she could sell it each year and use the money to get a good education - and so she did .
